Wedding Sparkler Mistakes & Solutions

Posted by

You have spent hours planning your wedding, ordering in your wedding favors, tasting wedding cakes, planning the decorations...countless little details to make your day extra special. You have a plan for your grand entrance, your first dance...but what about your grand exit? Did you buy wedding sparklers for the grand exit?

1st Wedding Grand Exit Mistake

Everything is going off as planned except just when you're lighting your sparklers, a venue representative tells you they sparklers have to be put out. There goes your grand exit and puts a downer on your day. That's the first mistake many make...checking with the venue to make sure that wedding sparklers are allowed. So when you're choosing your venue, make sure you add to your list of questions, do they allow sparklers and if any special permits are required.

2nd Grand Exit Mistake

It's important to have a sign or some kind of announcement letting your guests know when the grand exit with the sparklers is going to be so they'll stay to send you off and not leave early. Remember, timing is key. In the summer it gets darker later than in winter. Don't set the grand exit time at the exact time that you are schedule to leave your venue so plan your reception from beginning to end and make sure you leave enough time to do any cleanup, if necessary.

If there are chalkboards available at your venue, use them. If not, create a sign on poster board. You can have a custom handmade wedding sign, have it framed and keep for memorabilia.

3rd Wedding Sparkler Mistake

Make sure you have plenty enough outdoor location away from anything that could be flammable or made of hazardous materials. If you want to have a sparkler tunnel to walk through, make sure there's enough room for guests to form two lines and plenty of room for the bride's gown and the groom.

4th Mistake

Not everyone will want to use a sparkler so don't overbuy! Some guests will leave early, others are taking pictures and some will be visiting the restroom. The rule of thumb is to order enough sparklers for approximately 75% of your attending guests.

It's a good idea to look for wedding sparkler packages. Check out They have 8", 10", 20", 36" and the every popular heart sparklers.

5th Mistake

Make sure you have enough long matches (not really short ones) or a long candle lighter to light the sparklers. You can also use one sparklers to light the others. Please note: some sparklers may be a little harder to light, some are easy. Some burn longer than others. A good idea is to order some samples and test out the sparklers before investing money into something that you find out the day of your wedding is not what you wanted and have added stress from the sparklers not lighting the way you need them to.

Last and final mistake

Be sure to have the proper receptacles for disposing of the burnt sparklers. The best container is a galvanized metal buckets of sand set around strategically near where you are going to use the sparklers. Make sure the containers are clearly marked so people know that the buckets are to be used for sparkler disposal. Once you know the sparklers are thoroughly cool, you can throw them in the garbage. If you don't wait till they're cool, you could accidentally start a fire and that would not be a good way to start off your marriage.

Make sure you get plenty of photographs of your wedding sparkler grand exit! You'll have some specatular pics to remember your very, very special day.
